Essential Oils as Insect Repellent

Posted by andrew sanderson on

There have been a lot of posts in the wax melt and home fragrance groups recently asking about natural insect repellents.

Many of our fragrance oils contain small amount of natural oils but our essential oil blends have much higher concentrations of the active components that have insect repellent properties.
I will briefly outline the benefits of some of the components in our essential oil blend, Mandala.
The SDS for Mandala essential oil blend shows that it is made up from over 31% linalyl acetate, 30% linalool, 14% Patchouli, 5% ocimene and lower concentrations of other active components of essential oils.
Linalyl acetate is extracted from many plants and spices and is a major component in lavender, lemon, bergamot and clary sage. Linalyl has a calming, relaxing, stress relieving effect.
Mandala contains 30% linalool which is a natural insect repellent. It helps fight anxiety and has pain relieving and anti microbial properties.
Patchouli at 14% has insect repellent, anti microbial and anti fungal properties. Patchouli is relaxing and calming.
Ocimene at 5% is anti viral, anti fungal and anti inflammatory as well as being a decongestant, an expectorant in addition to other health benefits.
As you can see from this, Mandala not only smells great, it has great benefits, including keeping the flies at bay.
