Oud & Other Woody Fragrance Oils

We often get asked for fragrance oils that contain oud or other woody fragrance notes. Woody fragrances are one of our personal favourites so we have quite a few of these fragrance oils.
Oud has been around for centuries but it has only recently become popular in fragrance oils and western perfumes / aftershaves.
What is oud or oudh? Oud is a fragrant resinous wood also known as agarwood, aloeswood, eaglewood or gharuwood. It is formed in the wood of certain species of trees when they are infected with the mould Phialophora parasitica. Infected trees secrete resin to combat the mould. Trees that are not infected have pale and odourless wood compared to the infected trees. Many factors influence the final fragrance of the oud wood oud essential oil. What does oud smell like? The fragrance can vary but its rich and woody, slightly sweet and smoky. It often has earthy, leathery, musky, slightly spicy notes. We will describe our woody fragrances, some of which have oud notes in.

Categories are not cut and dried and often fragrances could be put in more than one category as the boundaries between fragrance categories blur but this should give you a good starting point

Before we were fragrance oil suppliers we were asked by one of our customers to make candles with woody fragrance notes. We went along with this request but were not convinced about the idea. As soon as we made the candles up we totally understood the request for woody scents. This request for candles started our love of woody fragrance oils.
