Petrichor Fragrance Oil Review

Posted by andrew sanderson on

Petrichor is the scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. The fragrance is earthy, damp, mossy and musky with a fresh element to it. The smell of petrichor is caused by plant oils as degrading in the soil by bacteria. When it rains the degradation speeds up producing an amazing fresh earthy smell that many of us love. We had been asked for petrichor fragrance oil several times but were not sure how great demand there would be. We needn’t have worried as once the fragrance oil arrived in October it flew off the shelf with customers quickly reordering.

Here are the fragrance notes:

Top notes of green apple, orange zest, galbanum and cucumber followed by mid notes of lemongrass, star anise, coconut and jasmine rounded off with base notes of earthy accord, vanilla bean, cedar, oakmoss and musk.

As usual we added 8g of fragrance oil to 100g Golden wax soy 494 then melted a 7.5g piece of the wax melt in an open plan room.

Once the wax starts to melt there is the unmistakable petrichor aroma. Usually the top notes give an initial note of freshness but with this fragrance the notes come off all at the same time with no single note dominating. Usually the mid notes form most of the character of the fragrance but in this case we would say that it is the base notes that are the stars of the show. This scent is damp, earthy, mossy and musky but in a pleasant way. This is very realistic and has received very good feedback from our customers. This is a fragrance oil that people will love or hate. So far we have had lots of customers who absolutely love this scent. For those who want an outdoors aroma which is fresh and atmospheric but a little less earthy and mossy, here are some other suggestions :

After The Rain fragrance oil – this is fresher and less earthy. Its like a coastal vegetable and herb garden after the rain.

Morning Dew fragrance oil – this is cool and fresh with hints of floral and fresh cool green notes.

Oakmoss & Amber fragrance oil – this is like a cool forest, fresh air but with more subtle mossy and earthy notes.

Petrichor fragrance oil can be used to make a room spray. See the IFRA 51 document on the fragrance oil listing for details.
